Hobbies, according to Merriam-Webster are “a pursuit outside one’s regular occupation engaged in especially for relaxation.” Everyone needs a hobby by that definition, but introverts may need them more than anyone else. If introverts didn’t have any hobbies, they would get bored to the point where they would likely start socializing with people. All jokes aside, hobbies are a great way for introverts to recharge their batteries and learn new things. Here’s a list of a few hobbies you may enjoy as an introvert. Also, share some of your favorite hobbies below, I would love to read them.

1. Reading

Of course, reading is going to be first on this list. This is a classic introvert past time and for good reason. There is so much to gain from reading and it can cost so little to get started. You can purchase books at amazon, or you can simply go to your local library and pick up some books for free. Local libraries even have audiobooks if you prefer that. Fellow introvert Bill Gates is a ferocious reader, reading up to 50 books a year.

2. Writing

Writing is another great hobby to try if you’re an introvert. Writing is challenging, but the clarity from putting pen to paper is therapeutic. Expressive writing is liberating. If you prefer to keep your thoughts more private you can maintain a journal instead of starting a blog or something similar. Also, there is no need to write America’s next best novel, or long journal entries, a few words a day is good enough.

3. Photography

Photography on the surface may seem more of an extroverted activity and when it comes to certain types of photography it is. However, you can choose what type of photography you’re interested in. There are so many niches in photography outside of weddings and club events. There’s product photography, landscape photography, and portrait photography where you can work with one to two people. As a fellow introvert I love working with small groups and if you are one too, I imagine you feel the same.

4. Music

Where would the world be without music? Simply put, it wouldn’t be the same. Music is one of those things that is easy to take for granted, because there is so much abundance of it. For introverts this is another way for them to express their creative side without having to convey too many words. Maybe that means  picking up an instrument like the piano and joining a band. It can also mean learning how to make beats and putting them up on YouTube. It can also be doing whatever feels natural to you and enjoying it without the need to tell the world about it.

5. Sports

When people hear the word sports most people think of team activities like football, soccer, and basketball. But there are plenty of individual sports to go around too. For example, golfing, skateboarding, cycling, swimming, bowling, running, fencing, and that’s just to name a few. Even some of the team sports like baseball and basketball can become great individual past times if you want them to be. Hitting balls at the batting cage or shooting hoops by yourself can be very relaxing for some introverts.

6. Baking

If you’re into baked goods baking can be a great hobby for you, especially if you’re an introvert. Having the opportunity to bake in the comforts of your home and enjoying the fruits of your labor. Of course, that’s if you’re baking with fruits. Now there are plenty of videos on YouTube to help you get started in baking all kinds of delicious goodies. Videos ranging from How to Make Marshmallow Fondants to Butter Soft Buns So Easy to Make Bread. Find what interests you and enjoy.

7. Gardening

Hobbies For Introverts

You may not have a green thumb, and that is okay. Gardening can still be a beautiful hobby to have, regardless of your past endeavors. The past is just the past anyway. Learning how to grow your own food and flowers is unquestionably fulfilling for some people. Introverts will love the solitude of being alone with their favorite plants, nurturing them, protecting them from the elements, while getting plenty of sunshine. (You and the plants.) Give gardening a try, it just might change your life.

8. Learning Computer Programming

If you’re into puzzles and problem solving, learning computer programming may be for you. Computer programing is another great way to keep your mind sharp as well. As you dive into the many layers of programming and languages like C# (C Sharp) you’ll learn how to build some cool stuff like apps and web designs. There is also a lot of information available for free to get you started in programming, just go on YouTube, and find a style that works for you.

9. Drawing/Coloring

For the more creative introverts or introverts who want to explore their creative side drawing/coloring is another one to give a shot. Coloring isn’t just for kids; adult coloring books are available and are here to stay. The benefits from adult coloring books are enough to give it a try. Coloring also doesn’t require much to get started as well as drawing. Amazon has a wide selection of books to choose from if you want to find something more specific like coloring to relieve stress, sneakers, and even horror.

Hobbies For Introverts

10. Learning Languages

Learning a foreign language is good hobby for introverts. It’s not as introverted as the others, because at some point you’re going to need to talk to someone in the language you’re learning. Regardless, learning a foreign language comes with a lot of benefits. You’ll likely find new appreciation for the country’s language and broaden your horizons. Duolingo is free and a great site to try in the beginning stages of learning, but you may want to give a local class a try to fill in the areas you may not be aware of.

Now that you’ve viewed this list of hobbies for introverts, which one appeals to you the most? These are just a few hobbies ideas to help get the ball rolling. Also, If I missed one of your favorite hobbies let me know, maybe it’ll be something I’ll give a try. Whatever hobby you decide to pursue I hope it brings you countless hours of enjoyment and relaxation.

Before you can embark on your journey as an introvert, you need to know if you are even an introvert in the first place. It may be difficult to admit you are an introvert, due to some common misunderstandings that circle around being an introvert. Most introverts are typically viewed as shy or socially anxious, but that’s not always the case. How can you tell if you’re introvert? Well, here’s a few signs to help see if you are one.

1. Alone Time is Your Favorite Time

Not all the time of course, spending time with your friends, family, and pets can be a great time for introverts, but after socializing for a while introverts like to have some time alone to enjoy their hobbies and personal interests. Which might mean going for a leisure walk in nature, reading a good book, or working on a passion project to recharge their batteries.

If this sounds like you, then you might be an introvert.

2. You Keep a Close-knit Circle

You don’t have a lot of friends and prefer it that way because you cherish the ones you do have. Quality over quantity is your motto. Introverts favor one-on-one interactions over group settings. Introverts are excellent when it comes to developing meaningful long-lasting relationships. Operating on superficial levels just don’t do it for introverts.

If this also sounds like you this may be another tell-tell that you’re an introvert.

3. You're a Bit Mysterious

Most people don’t really know much about you other than what they see. Introverts tend to spend very little time engaging with others and a lot of time engaging with their own thoughts. That can come across as distant to outside observers. Making them a little curious about who you are or at least wonder what’s on your mind.

If any of this sounds familiar, you’re likely an introvert.

4. You're More Self-Aware Than Average

True self-awareness is rare according to this article https://hbr.org/2018/01/what-self-awareness-really-is-and-how-to-cultivate-it. There are two types of self-awareness: Internal self-awareness and external self-awareness. Introverts like to live in their head. This is where their self-awareness starts to develop and grow. This is also what makes introverts great leaders. The ability to see the effect of their actions in multiple ways and if it is benefiting the team.

If you feel like you’re self-aware and find yourself examining situations to gain more insight, you may be an introvert.

5. You're a Good Listener

People have told you that you are a great listener or that they appreciate you for listening. Most, if not all introverts prefer to listen rather than speak. Introverts usually listen hoping to learn something new whenever they are listening. As the Dalai Lama once said, “When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. But if you listen, you may learn something new.”

If you feel like you are a great listener or have been told you are a great listener, then there’s a good possibility you’re an introvert.

6. You're Not a Fan of Small Talk

Introverts despise small talk. They can do it, but it’s not what they really want to do when it comes to talking to people. Introverts would much rather talk about something deeper than the weather or this week’s celebrity gossip. Conversations around philosophy, ideologies, and moral are more interesting topics for introverts.

If you’re not a fan small talk, you’re more than likely an introvert.

7. Writing is Your Preferred Way of Communication

You would rather text than talk on the phone, email coworkers than sit in business meetings, or journal over recording thoughts on a voice recorder. Writing offers introverts more time to reflect on what they are trying to say and how they want to say it. Words matters and introverts want to use the best words they can when they can.
